Europe Summer Travel Tips from an Industry Expert
Published: February 28, 2025
If you’re planning a private flight to Europe this summer, there are a few important differences to keep in mind compared to domestic travel. From slot restrictions and passport requirements to the type of aircraft you'll need, these details can make a big impact on your experience.
Our Executive Vice President of Sales, Vincent Kavanagh, outlined several important factors to consider ahead of your trip.
Slot Times Matter, A Lot
Major airports across Europe, including those near London, Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, Madrid, and Rome, operate with strict takeoff and landing slot times compared to the US. Unlike the U.S., these slots are mandatory and highly regulated. If you're planning to hop between countries or return to the U.S. from Europe, it’s critical to stick to your assigned slot time. Missing it can result in a long wait for an alternative.
Ground Transportation May Not Be Airside
Unlike many U.S. airports, European FBOs are often more restrictive when it comes to vehicle access, and your ground transportation may not be able to meet you planeside.
Passport Requirements & Entry Approvals
U.S. travelers must have a passport valid for at least 3 months beyond their planned departure date from Europe. Beginning in mid-2025, U.S. citizens will also need to apply for ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) approval. Once granted, ETIAS is valid for 3 years or until your passport expires.
Customs & Immigration Still Apply
Even when flying private you’ll still need to clear Customs and Immigration upon arrival. Fortunately, many private terminals offer expedited processing, and we can coordinate these details in advance for a smoother experience.
Aircraft Type Makes a Difference
For long-range flights, especially from the U.S. East or West Coast, you’ll need a heavy jet or Ultra Long Range (ULR) aircraft like a Gulfstream G550/G650ER or Bombardier Global family. These aircraft are designed for comfort and distance, offering lie-flat beds, private suites, and full galleys for gourmet catering.
More Airports = More Flexibility
Private jets can access far more airports than commercial flights, including smaller European airfields closer to your final destination. Let us know where you need to be, and we’ll plan your trip around the most convenient and time-saving options.
Additional Fees When Departing France
France imposes a Civil Aviation Tax and Solidarity Tax on all departures, including private jet flights. These charges vary depending on aircraft type, distance, and passenger count, and are standard for flights leaving French airports.
