A City of Layers and Legacy

Paris is a city shaped by centuries, an ever-evolving capital built on a foundation of art, philosophy, politics, and design. Long before it became a destination for fashion houses, Michelin-starred restaurants, and global tourism, Paris was a Roman settlement known as Lutetia. Over time, it grew into a medieval hub of education and religion. From Gothic cathedrals and Enlightenment salons to world fairs and revolutions, Paris has long played a central role in shaping European identity.

That layered history is still visible across the city today. Notre-Dame, whose construction began in the 12th century, stands just blocks from the Latin Quarter, home to the Sorbonne and some of Europe’s earliest universities. The transformation of Paris in the 19th century gave the city its wide boulevards, manicured parks, and uniform façades. It was a redesign that continues to define the way the city looks and moves. By the time the Eiffel Tower was built for the 1889 World’s Fair, Paris had firmly established itself as a modern European capital.

The 20th century brought new momentum. Paris became a center for artistic movements like Impressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism, while writers, philosophers, and political thinkers shaped discourse from the city’s cafés and publishing houses. Today, its influence continues through major institutions like the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, and Centre Pompidou, as well as annual events like Paris Fashion Week and FIAC. The city’s architectural contrasts, from medieval alleyways to contemporary spaces like the Fondation Louis Vuitton, reflect its ability to evolve without losing its sense of identity.

While many visitors come for the landmarks, much of Paris’s character is found in its neighborhoods. The literary cafés of Saint-Germain, the galleries and markets of Le Marais, the village feel of Montmartre, and the global energy of Belleville each tell their own story. Together, they form a city that continues to grow while remaining closely connected to its past.
